A telling line in this 20k word essay by Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.

Technology hype of has us obsessing on the future – is it doom or gloom?
But the reality is often far from that. It’s just hard to cut through all the noise.
Amodei’s essay ‘The Adolescence of Technology’ is brilliant, albeit dense.
Here are the five key things you need to know:
1. Acknowledge the Uncertainty: Even the creators of these models admit that AI might not advance as fast as predicted. The “exponential curve” is not a guaranteed.
2. Reject “Doomerism”: We need to stop treating AI risks like a sci-fi religion. Panic leads to poor decision-making; we need sober, fact-based assessments of where the technology actually is.
3. The “Adolescence” Phase: Humanity is currently in a “technological adolescence.” We have been handed immense power, and the real test is whether our leadership and maturity can grow fast enough to wield it responsibly.
4. Regulation Requires a Scalpel, Not a Hammer: To manage risk without killing innovation, we need “surgical” interventions (like specific export controls) rather than broad, reactionary rules that stifle value.
5. AI is “Grown,” Not “Built”: Training and adopting AI is more like raising a biological organism than coding software. It’s unpredictable and requires constant, human steering to ensure it aligns with our values.
The key takeout for me is the word “Adolescence”. We are in an immature, messy stage of Generative AI / LLMs.
Our job as humans, and in particular business leaders, is to ensure we have the maturity to guide it, rather than just reacting to the hype.
