# OpenAI's biggest backer just warned the world about companies like OpenAI.

Awkward. Or is something else going on?

This week Satya Nadella told the WSJ "We Can’t Let AI Giants Eat the Economy".

His argument, in a nutsell: if all the value of AI ends up with a handful of frontier models, the political economy won't tolerate it, so every organisation should build its own "learning loop" grounded in private data and its own evaluations.

Microsoft is OpenAI's biggest financial backer.
It's reportedly spending around $190bn on data centres this year.

OpenAi is no doubt feeling threatened by Anthropic, and open source models.

Perhaps this is a swipe at Anthropic. More likely I think it's a move to put Microsoft back at the heart of the conversation, in particular when it comes to companies data.

That aside, I think he's right on these points:

The "all white-collar jobs are gone, so give us unlimited power to build data centres" framing has always felt like hype dressed up as inevitability.

The need for private data and learning loops. Private evaluation against the outcomes that actually matter to your business.

That's where real advantage comes from for your organisation.

Worth a read if you're setting AI strategy right now.
