Meta spent the first half of this year planning to hand a large chunk of its employees' work over to AI agents. Reuters shared an interesting investigation into it last week!

This story reached me on holiday, and I've been sending it to people ever since.

The plan was called Project OT, Organisation Transformation. Cut some teams by as much as 60%, in two waves. First in May, second in November.

The May cuts went ahead, but the second wave was cancelled, hours before the first one was even announced.

The U-turn is the headline, but the numbers underneath it are the really interesting part.

Code changes to Meta's internal software platforms were up 220% year on year.

Changes that actually led to new or upgraded features were up 36%.

Major technical and security incidents were up around 40%.

A lot more activity, without much more product at the end of it, and more things breaking along the way.

Staff sentiment in Meta's own Pulse survey fell from 74% favourable to 55% over the same period.

Meta is about as well-resourced as an AI experiment gets. If the agents couldn't reliably do the work there, the ideas landing in your company deserve a harder look.

Generative AI isn't intelligence. It's a tool that makes good people faster and sharper, and it still needs a lot of human oversight to do it.

We're working with lots of clients at 7DOTS, to help them to get this balance right. Identify where technology can help, and supporting teams to get the results organisations need.
