Googles announces new retail tools designed for agentic commerce and AI advertising. Here is what it means for retail leaders.

Google is shifting from a search engine that sends traffic to your website, to one that handles the sale directly.

They have just announced a range of new tools designed around "Agentic Commerce." This means AI agents (bots) will now be able to research, negotiate, and buy products on behalf of humans, without the human ever visiting your online store.

Here are five key announcements and what they mean for your business.

  1. Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
At the moment, AI bots can't purchase through your checkout. UCP is a new universal standard that allows agents to bypass the website and transact directly with your inventory and payment systems.
  • Your e-commerce store needs to speak this language. If it does, any AI agent (not just Google’s) can sell your products.
  1. Checkout on Google AI
This is "One-Click Buy" for the AI era. When a customer is chatting with Gemini (Google's AI) about a product, they can now click "Buy" right there in the chat. They use their Google Wallet info to pay.
  • This reduces friction and creates a high-conversion funnel. Impulse buying becomes easier.
  1. Business Agent
This is a virtual sales associate that sits on Google Search. Instead of just seeing a link to your site, customers can click "Chat" and speak to an AI bot trained on your brand’s data to answer questions ("Does this fit true to size?").
  • You can now actively sell to customers before they click a link.
  • You need to configure this in Google’s Merchant Center. If you don’t train it well, it might give generic or incorrect answers that hurt your brand image.
  1. New Data Attributes in Merchant Center
Google is changing how it ranks products. They want deep, contextual data. You need to feed their system structured info about "lifestyle usage," "compatibility," and "substitutes."
  • If your product data is messy or thin, the AI won’t recommend you. You need to audit your product feeds and update the information to reflect what customers ask.
  1. Direct Offers
Dynamic, high-intent offers. If Google’s AI detects a user is on the fence about buying your product, it can serve a specific discount (e.g., 20% off) directly in the chat to close the deal.
  • Instead of blanketing the web with generic offers, you can target discounts only to people who need a nudge to convert, turning Google Ads into a "closing tool".

Discovery, research, and purchase are going to start happening simultaneously inside a chat window. It won't happen overnight, but this is a step in that direction.

On one hand this will create a more seamless experience, on another, it gives even more power and control to Google. More on this later.

For now, you should stop thinking of your e-commerce website as the only place transactions can happen and start preparing for AI agents to sell products, wherever the customer is!
