# Anthropic says we might need a global pause in AI development.

We don't. It wouldn't work.
This is what I think is really going on.

For context, Anthropic, the makers of Claude Chat / Cowork / Code / Design recently posted a blog talking about Claude's self-development ability.

They go on to discuss the potential need for a global pause in AI development.

Acknowledging "we're not there yet, and it's not inevitable", discussing a "coordinated mechanism" for when it might be needed.

The The Wall Street Journal (and others) have jumped on the scary headline.

But this is what I think is really going on:

1. They are facing fierce competition.

And they have a challenge with token usage and customer rising costs.

Many people are moving to cheaper models, including open source models from China.

As well as OpenAI announcing a new challenger version of ChatGPT.

Anthropic want to slow this all down.

And they want to promote how good their tools are to fight off competition.

Which leads me to point 2.

2. It's really very good marketing and PR.

Anthropic have been getting much better at marketing and PR.

Something they famously seemed to avoid (or be bad at) for a while.

This post is the ultimate PR hook - something potentially terrifying about AI and how they want to spearhead solving it.

Last but not least...

3. The models aren't really this good yet.

The point they do acknowledge. But the press has conveniently dropped.

The models are getting better at self-development, and the speed of development is increasing.

But context window issues, and general ability, isn't where it needs to be for this to really happen.

Yes, we do need better governance and control of AI development.

We need to shape the future of technology to create better outcomes for humans.

But a global pause just wouldn't work.

If you're using AI daily, are you concerned it's about to slip out of your control? Do you think a global pause would work or even be possible?
